Historic District Homes for Sale in Camden, SC
Overview
The Historic District is located in downtown Camden, South Carolina, one of the oldest inland cities in the state. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, the district is architecturally and militarily significant as a center of activity in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. The city was named in honor of Lord Camden, British champion of colonial rights. In 1774, wide streets were laid off in a grid pattern, and the town expanded northward following a 1798 plat that set aside six parks, forming the basis for Camden's present 178 acres of parkland.
Amenities
The Historic District includes beautifully preserved and restored homes featuring Federal and Classical Revival architecture, along with cottage-type, Georgian, and Charleston-type designs with modifications. Many mansions were built around original summer cottages dating to before 1840 in the Kirkwood area, north of Chesnut Street. Most of the original town was destroyed by fire in 1813, which accelerated northward expansion. Several buildings were designed by noted architect Robert Mills.
The district features significant landmarks including the Kershaw County Courthouse, Camden Opera House and Clock Tower, Confederate Monument, Baron De Kalb Monument, and the Camden Powder Magazine. Historic churches include Grace Episcopal Church, Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Trinity United Methodist Church, and St. Mary's Catholic Church. The neighborhood is within walking distance of Hampton Park and downtown shops and restaurants on Broad Street.
