The Shandon neighborhood is touted by many as one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Columbia. Shandon is a historic urban neighborhood that caters to an active downtown lifestyle and is one of the oldest communities in Columbia. Shandon was established officially in 1904 as the Town of Shandon and later annexed into The City of Columbia in 1913. The official boundaries of the neighborhood encompass; Devine Street to Rosewood Drive, and from Harden Street to Kilbourne Drive and covers an area of approximately 1 square mile. Within the neighborhood boundaries there are two neighborhood parks, five churches, two schools and several local businesses including shops, restaurants, and two grocery stores. Hand Middle School is located at the center of the neighborhood and often serves as a gathering place for residents who enjoy use of the track and field and special events when school is not in session.
Architectural styles in Historic Shandon range from '4-square', which are 2-story homes dating back to the early 1900’s, to smaller Craftsman style cottages and bungalows that average anywhere between 1000 and 4000 square feet. Home values continue to increase and typically range between $200,000 and $500,000, however some homes in the neighborhood approach $1M in value(in 2015).

Shandon is biking and/or walking distance to University of South Carolina campus, The South Carolina State House, and The Vista. Also within walking distance is the Rosewood business district and the eclectic Five Points Village. With it's wide tree-lined streets with sidewalks throughout, the area is a favorite spot for joggers and runners, and hosts more road races than any other neighborhood in the state.
