Scout Motors in Blythewood: What This Major Project Means for Columbia SC
Scout Motors in Blythewood:
Scout Motors is an electric vehicle manufacturer backed by Volkswagen, and it has chosen Blythewood, South Carolina as the site of a major new production facility. The company announced the project in 2023, selecting more than 1,100 acres off I-77 for a state-of-the-art assembly plant. The investment is about two billion dollars, making it one of the largest economic development projects ever announced in Richland County. Scout plans to build rugged, body-on-frame electric SUVs and trucks, with a long-term goal of producing up to two hundred thousand vehicles a year once the plant is fully operational.
The location in Blythewood gives Scout Motors easy access to major highways, rail connections, and the Columbia metropolitan area. It also places the company near a growing workforce, technical colleges, and suppliers who may move into the region as construction progresses. When the facility reaches full staffing, Scout is expected to create around four thousand permanent jobs. This kind of growth usually brings new housing demand, more activity in nearby commercial corridors, and additional investment in local infrastructure. In fact, several road improvements and an interstate interchange project are already tied to the development.
Construction began with site preparation in 2023, and work has continued through 2024 and 2025. The company has shared steady updates on grading, utilities, and foundation work. Production is expected to begin in 2026 or 2027, with hiring and training happening well before that. For Blythewood and the surrounding Midlands, the project represents a long-term economic shift. Large manufacturing plants often attract supporting businesses, create new job paths for residents, and increase interest in nearby neighborhoods.
