Neighborhoods Near Fort Jackson

The area directly below the Columbia Northeast is known as the Dentsville Area.  There are many military personnel that buy homes in this area because it is so close to Fort Jackson.  Fort Jackson is a huge economic influence for Columbia’s housing market.  If you are stationed at Ft. Jackson... then you probably qualify to buy an affordable home near Ft. Jackson.  There are several nice established neighborhoods just outside the gates of Fort Jackson.  Many of them are older neighborhoods from the 1960's-1980's.

In this era of home building's simplicity and quality peaked.  Houses were built as "homes" and not so much as a "unit".  The majority of them are on larger lots with mature vegetation and large shade trees.  Many of them were 3-4 bedroom homes with 1-3 baths that were built on a crawl space (or basement) rather than a slab.   You'll also find homes with unique southern architecture that are often a "want" for a common homebuyer.  Front porches, screened in porches, wrought iron fences, formal living and dining rooms were a staple of the building industry in these decades.  Today it is known as "an upgrade" and will cost you a little extra.

If this area isn’t suitable you will find several new home real estate developments in the Columbia Northeast area.  The Columbia Northeast is where you can find a mixture of home styles both old and new.  Since the mid-1990s new home developments in the Columbia Northeast have been making their presence up and down Hardscrabble and Clemson Roads.  You can navigate into almost any subdivision in the Columbia Northeast by traveling on these two main thoroughfares.  But if you want to stick close to the Fort Jackson area... then the Dentsville area may be your neighborhood.

Dentsville stretches from Fort Jackson, to Columbia Mall, and to Midlands Technical College NE Campus.  Some of the sections around this area have suffered from relocating companies moving toward popular suburban areas.  Columbia Mall was once in the spotlight for well known department stores but it seems to have suffered from the on-going construction at The Village at Sandhills.  However, there are still opportunities and industry in the Dentsville area.  It's now the breeding ground for "Mom and Pops" stores.

Subdivisions in the Dentsville area include

Forest Acres
Woodfield Park
Arcadia Lakes
Kings Grant
Forest Lake
Heathwood
Springwood Lakes
