Choosing the Right Carpet | Tips for Rehab Properties in Columbia SC

If you are planning on replacing your floor covering with carpet there are several options that you have.  There are now practically endless choices of color to choose from.  Most retailers will loan you a "Sample Board" that has several swatches of carpet so that you match the carpet colors to your walls, furniture, and curtains.

Style: Berber vs. Plush

First you must decide what style and fabric type that is preferable for your home.  There are basically 2 types of carpet, Berber and Plush.  Looking for looped yarn fibers that make up the surface of the carpet will identify Berber Carpet, whereas 'Plush' carpet is cut threads of yarn.  Plush carpet is probably the most traditional style.  Another difference is that with Berber carpet, dirt particles tend to sit on top, rather than falling into the fibers as with Plush carpet.

Fabric Type: Polyester vs. Nylon

The fabric type is also another characteristic that you must consider when making your decision.  In high-traffic areas you should consider using a nylon fiber which is longer wearing but not as soft.  If you want a softer carpet with a quicker wear time then a polyester fiber may be the best solution.

Measurement, Removal and Installation

Carpet is measured in square yards rather than square feet.  It also comes in different widths such as 12 or 15 feet.  When ordering carpet make sure that you lay it out so that the seams fall on a threshold or an inconspicuous place.  Professionals are great at hiding seams but sometimes they will show.  If you are removing old carpet, you can sometimes leave the carpet padding and tack strips.  Usually replacing the padding is a good idea but the tack strips may have a longer life.  Also, when removing carpet you should cut it into manageable pieces so that you don't strain yourself with the weight and so that you don't scuff up your newly painted walls, doors, door casings and trim.
