All about Harden Street

Harden Street Columbia SC

Harden Street is a main thoroughfare running through old Columbia. It begins at Bull Street (at Palmetto Richland Hospital) and continues through Rosewood Drive splitting the historic neighborhoods of Shandon and Wales Garden (just beyond Five Points). Harden Street may be one of the most well known roads in Columbia because it is virtually impossible to get to Five Points without entering onto this road.

Beginning at Palmetto Richland Hospital on Bull Street, it intersects with most of the major streets including Farrow Road, Taylor Street, Gervais Street, Greene Street, Devine Street, Blossom Street and finally Rosewood Drive... at which point it crosses into South Harden Street. Major landmarks along Harden Street include, Benedict College, Allen University, Barron's Fishing, The State Hospital, Richland County Administrative Building, Five Points and The Five Points Fountain, Group Therapy Bar, Yesterdays Bar and Tavern, and informally the home of artist Earnest Lee known as ‘The Chicken Man' by locals. There are also a wide range of historic homes located on Harden Street between Blossom Street and Rosewood Drive. If you travel a few blocks off of Harden you will also see some of the traditional southern style homes dating back to the 1800s.

To get onto Harden Street you can take either I-77 or I-20 to 277. 277 turns into Bull Street at the first intersection which is Harden Street. Turning left here will take you the entire course of this street. It is a 4-lane road all the way to Blossom Street where it turns into 2 lanes and is mostly residential.
